Reveal of our Elevated Sports Lounge & Multi-Purpose Space – ORC – Week 6

If you’ve been following along you’ll know that we have been working on converting a spare bedroom into an elevated sports lounge / office / gym / guest room for my husband as part of The One Room Challenge®.

After many weeks of projects (click to see the corresponding blog post) – we tackled a general design plan, installed wallpaper, converted & refinished a console table into a computer desk, created no sew custom curtains, and even built a magnetic gold frame for around our frame tv. I’m happy to report that we pulled together a few more touches like adding bookcases & finalizing the gym area & now the space is pretty much complete!

Together we were able to really transform this space into a dark & moody sanctuary that packs so many uses into a small room.

What’s Left?

While we have accomplished a lot in this space – there are a couple elements that we just didn’t get to yet – such as ordering the couch & ordering gold picture lights for above the bookcases and a gold floor lamp.

A pull out couch was a pivotal part of the vision for this space to be used as a guest room. When we first started talking about this space – a dark brown leather chesterfield was always the goal. We searched for months and never found one that was the right dimensions, had a pull out sofa & was within budget. So we scrapped the idea and built the design plan around a super budget friendly navy blue tufted futon. Just before we went to place the order for the futon I did one last google search & discovered a new company that had never popped up in my research before – Roger & Chris.

They make very customized couches with built in sleepers that are absolutely stunning & made in the USA. Within a few clicks we literally found our dream sofa – it’s called The Lincoln – it features a high back with beautiful tufting, a classic narrow slope arm, and it can be customized to include a queen size sleeper, while keeping a small foot print in the room. Oh & you can pick from hundreds of styles of leather too! The only downside to this couch is that we knew it wouldn’t arrive in time for the reveal, so we held off on ordering it, until we finished the rest of the room. That way we can pick the perfect shade of brown leather to compliment the other pieces in the space. Currently my leather swatches are en route, so just imagine our space with a gorgeous couch where the chairs currently are. It will be dreamy.

The Gym

We intentionally designed this room to have a large amount of open floor space so that we could use the room as a gym. I was able to clear out the closet in this room to make it into a storage area for the majority of our gym equipment. I mounted a mirror to the closet wall, and tucked away our elliptical, weights, a yoga mat and a few other small workout pieces. Now we can easily pull out the gym equipment when we need it, but won’t have to look at it when we’re using the room for another purpose. The only item that I couldn’t stow away was our bow flex bench, but it folds up and fits nicely behind the door to the room, so it’s hardly noticeable.

The Lounge

Until our new couch arrives, we have a set of French style leather chairs to relax in. We also paired them with a mini coffee table that was passed down from my husband’s grandfather.

What is any lounge without a bar? We opted to do a small bar globe in the corner.

The Bookcases

We scored an amazing set of coordinating bookcases on FBMP. They are a beautiful wood tone, and feature chic brass detailing. I love that these bookcases perfectly tie in to each usecase for the room. The drawers are perfect for when the space is used as a guest room. The sports memorabilia adds to the gym ambiance. There’s also a hidden bar cabinet which houses one of the first gifts I gave my husband – a monogrammed flask and a Jonny Walker scented candle. The bookcases also have enough storage to display books & house our office supplies too which really make it a win win piece!

Styling the Bookcases

My husband has always been into sports, and has been collecting sports memorabilia since he was a kid. I was able to take some pieces from his childhood bedroom & make them work nicely for our more adult, elevated space. The best part was that he had so much stuff that we only had to buy a few picture frames, everything else was already part of his collection. We used some gold gallery frames to display some of his signed photographs. Vin Baker & Michael Jordan both even got their own dedicated cubbies. I then layered in his collection of signed books and some trinkets that he’s collected over the years, or were gifted to him from his grandparents. It’s so nice to finally have a functional place to display everything, all while making the room feel so much more personal & on theme.

The Finishing Touches

For the finishing touches I tied in a few traditional pieces like these blue and white ginger jars, and a little gold clock. One piece my husband’s really wanted on display was his photo and certificate from attending the Michael Jordan Basketball camp when he was ten. I added some gold rub n buff and you would have thought it was made for the space. I also framed a few of his basketball cards that feature Chares Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal & Kobe Bryant.
