One Room Challenge
Over the next 8 weeks, I’ll be joining the One Room Challenge as a guest participant & you will be able to following along with me every step of the way as I transform my closet into a dreamy dressing room with maximized storage & a much improved footprint.
If you haven’t heard of the The One Room Challenge® before – its purpose is to encourage and support each other in finishing a room. The spirit of the ORC is solely to celebrate interior design in a positive, supportive environment. The ORC is not a competition, but rather a celebration of creativity, inspiration, and original ideas.
Our Closet’s Before
We moved into our house in 2020 & put off doing any work in the closet. For the past five years we’ve made use of the wire shelves, wooden double hanging rods, placed a full length mirror in the space, utilized the storage tower for shoes & didn’t even bother removing the fruit inspired 90’s wallpaper. The rest of the space went unused.

Layout
The biggest challenge with this closet is the layout. While it is spacious at about 8 feet by 8 feet. It was only utilizing two of the four walls for storage. By moving the entry way & squaring off the room the additional space allows for a better flow & much more storage potential.

Wardrobes
After getting quotes for custom closets, we decided it would be best to build out Ikea Pax units for the space. As this is a shared closet, my husband will get the wardrobes on the left wall which are two 29″ Pax units, I’ll have the back wall for all of my hanging clothes, which will include a 19″, a 39″ and a 29″ Pax unit, and then on the right hand wall, I’ll have an additional 29″ Pax unit for shoe storage.

My Ikea Order
Here’s everything I ordered from IKEA to create our custom built-in closet, broken down by each wardrobe section with the shorter pax units that are 79″ tall. You can shop the thumbnails of each item here.

As his wardrobes are side by side – I split the doors so each wardrobe has one AHEIM door in the middle and one small FORSAND door on the outside.
I did not order any of the Ikea rods – I opted to go with a more luxe option that actually cost less than their version. I have an entire post about it here.

Design
While I could easily install the Ikea Pax units, and use them as is. I want to make them feel more luxurious & built in, so I’ll be adding decorative trim, crown molding to give it a much more finished & timeless look. And since my dream is to live in a mini version of Versailles – I’ll also be adding tons of french inspired details including jib doors to the closet so that from the bedroom the closet door will appear hidden as if it is it’s own secret little dressing room.

Be sure to follow along with me on Instagram over the next eight weeks as I bring this dream closet from an AI illustration to real life!
