The Color Palate
Whenever I begin to plan a tablescape the very first thing I start with is a color palate. I’m sure for most of us, when we think of Halloween typically the first colors that come to mind are black and orange. While I’m a big orange fan at heart (Go Cuse!), it’s one of my least favorite colors. As I wanted to do something seasonal, yet sophisticated, I opted for a monochromatic color palate which included blacks, whites and hints of gray.
The Foundations
For this tablescape I worked mostly with items that I had collected over the years. I started by utilizing my everyday Kate Spade china which features black stripes, that are almost reminiscent of a spider web, and my everyday silverware. Then I added in my crystal glassware. The etched crystal added a layer of dimension that keeps it both modern & interesting to the eyes. For some additional height I added my glass candle holders. Then I began to add in some festive fall touches. My marble pedestal was the perfect vessel for my faux white pumpkins. A friend of a friend also specializes in glass blowing, so dark purple iridescent hand blown pumpkin looked meant to be. For another spooky touch I incorporated my husband’s old Crystal Head Vodka bottle with our bar accessories, which date back to our college days, when he kept every liquor bottle that he consumed as décor. Luckily we’ve moved past that phase, and it now only gets broken out seasonally. I also sprinkled the table with some bat confetti that I bought last year.
Since I was able to use so much that I already had on hand, I was able to complete this look for under $40 total. The only items I purchased this year were the Halloween Bats, which make a huge impact for such a small price point. I love that they fold flat to be stored away in a small envelope. I scored the Happy Halloween Banner and the white ribbed candles from the dollar section at Target. I also got some new napkins from CB2, which I folded into bats, and picked up some fresh seasonal flowers.
The Flowers
Initially my vision for this table included white roses, however over the years I’ve learned that it’s always best to shop for flowers with an open mind. If you focus instead on the color palate and freshness of the flowers, you’re bound to put together a more beautiful arrangement than if you were to specifically shop by an exact variety. When I got to Trader Joe’s the white roses were very cream colored, and were already starting to brown on the edges. I then scanned the buckets of flowers looking for a more true white, and was thrilled when I came across these white mums, which had an almost black center! Talk about a stroke of luck! I also love that mums are such a staple when it comes to fall that they fit perfectly with the seasonal tone I wanted to set.
The Bat Napkins
Are these not the most adorable Black Napkins that you’ve ever seen?! I love that they tie in the bats, and give a subtle fun yet dark quality to the table. When I researched bat napkins, I found some simple options that were nice, but just weren’t detailed enough for me. So being the extra person that I am, I researched some additional origami and napkin folding methods and custom created this 3D looking “Batkin” just for you all! It is definitely an advanced level napkin fold. I also will have a Reel for how I folded the napkins for you to try at home!
Let me know in the comments below if you try out the napkin fold or find inspiration in any other aspect of my monochromatic Halloween tablescape!
